                       Tekkoshocon 2010 Modeling Competition Categories, Rules, and Times

Tekkoshocon will be hosting a modeling competition again in 2010! Come prepared to face some great competition as we enter our 6st year with a model comp!
We are out to challenge the best of the anime modeling community!

*Competition Times

Entries will begin being accepted at Noon Friday April 9, 2010.
Entries for the Modeling Competition must be entered and presented by
1:00 PM on Saturday 10, April 2010.

Judging will begin at approximately 1:30PM Saturday 10, April 2010 of that
day.
Winners will be announced at the competition after judging is complete,
estimated to be around 2:30 PM.

There will be an attendant present at the Modeling Competition until 3:30pm to
watch/protect the entries. Please pick up your kits by 3:30pm.

Times short list:
Entries begin being accepted: Noon Friday
Entry closes: 1:00 PM Saturday
Judging Begins: 1:30 PM Saturday
Pick up entries by: 3:30 PM Saturday

*Categories
Tekkoshocon Staff will confirm the entries are in the appropriate categories.

Anime Diorama:
Any subject from any of the Anime. Open to all scales and subjects. It must depict a scene.

Anime Figure -All Scales:
Any humanoid or animal figure that has appeared in an anime. The kit cannot be a robot, or interpreted as a robot (Mecha).

Anime Misc:
Any non-figure or non-robot vehicles that appear in an anime. Non-robot vehicles also fall under this category

Cosplay Prop:
A "prop" is an item held or used but not typically worn by a character that is significant for characterization or plot development purposes.

Mecha - General
Any Non-Gundam mechanical kit:
Any scale or non-scale model is legal as long as it is not a Gundam or humanoid figure and has appeared in an anime.

Mecha - Gundam Small Scale
Any subject from any of the Gundam Universes. A small scale kit is any kit 1:144 scale or smaller than 8 inches.

Mecha - Gundam Large Scale
Any subject from any of the Gundam Universes. A large scale kit is any kit 1:100 scale or larger than 8 inches.

People’s Choice:
During Friday and Saturday other convention attendees can stop by the model show and vote for their favorite model entry. Only 1 vote per attendee.

Best of Show:
Best of show is awarded to the model of any category with the highest point total based on the judging criteria.

*Rules

   1. Competitor must have a valid Tekkoshocon registration for the day of the competition.
   2. All work submitted must be his/her own work.
   3. An entry into the modeling competition cannot be listed as for sale in Artists' Alley.
   4. All kits must adhere to the "family friendly" con experience.
   5. All kits are expected to be painted.

*Judging Criteria
There will be 5 Judges. Using the criteria below, all scores for each model from every judge will be totaled to determine the winners.

Presentation – 20 pts – This is how the kit is displayed for judging. This includes: Base, pose, and a non-technical look at the piece which is a 2ft judgment of the piece. A 2ft judgment is at a distance how does the piece look. A piece can look incredible at 2ft but be technically flawed at close inspection. This is also any custom painting, decals, or other items that are added to the kit to add to the appearance of the piece away from its technical merits.

Finish – 10 pts – This is a careful inspection of the actual painting, decals, weathering. Items to be judged: excessive brush strokes, overspray, decals that are peeling or silvering, stickers (if used) not showing signs of peeling or abuse. Sticker abuse is the sticker showing signs of being removed and reapplied and/or having creases and various other signs of poor care.

Construction – 15 pts – This is the actual skill used in building the piece. This is hiding visible seams, correcting of flaws in the kit, filling open areas that should be solid. This is general issues with how the kit was assembled. Some additional issues covered here are custom modifications done to the kit to make it better (Lighting, new jointing, correcting joint issues, addition of conversion kit parts)

***Bonus
Anime/Manga Accuracy Bonus – 5 pts – This is an all or nothing bonus given to kits that are deemed by the judges to be mostly anime accurate. Because an Anime accurate kit typically cannot evenly compete against a custom paint/construction themed kit. This bonus exists to encourage anime accurate kits to be built and entered.

The easiest way to look at this is if it looks close to the image on the box it will get the bonus. The modeler should apply common sense as to what will achieve the bonus.

Below are listed items that are legal/not legal to be done, but remember, if it looks close to the image on the box it will get the bonus.


    * The kit is permitted to have reasonable detailing decals, this includes warning markings, unit specifications and identifications.
    * The kit should not have large decals that cannot be found easily on the internet on source material.

    * The kit must be 90% color accurate. An RX 78-2 Gundam should be red, yellow, blue, and white in the appropriate places. The colors do not have to be exact but at least close to the subject matter's colors.

    * The kit is allowed to have, where appropriate, a custom unit marking paint color. Macross Valkyries have the colored bar across the top of the fighter, this is permitted to be any color because it is a unit identifier.

    * The kit, if it is a color variation and comes from the manufacturer that way, as long as it matches the colors specified by the box, it is legal. Proof of the manufactured variant must be provided.

    * Anime accuracy bonus requires that the entry follow the rules for the competition

    * Modifications to the kit cannot significantly change the appearance of the kit. The changes should appear transparent to a judge.

    * Addition of weapons and mounting points of the kit is legal as long as the weapon does not change the overall appearance of the subject.

    * Battle damage and custom creation of inner workings are legal.
            Example - A RGM-79 GM that has its legs removed, inner workings exposed and lights flashing simulating damage are legal modifications if the unit appears correct in the parts that are not damaged

    * Weathering is 100% legal
    * Shading (Pre-shading) is legal

Yes. Tekkoshocon staff can compete in the model contest as long as they are not Model Comp staff.

On the last forum, it was confirmed props are considered models and are allowed to compete, but it doesn't seem quite clear in these rules--Anime--Misc I keep reading as being vehicles only.

I think it needs a little clarification.

Anime Misc cover anything not covered in any other category. So props are welcome and would be under Anime Misc.

The model competition at Tekko is a contest where people enter their scale models of figures, characters, props, or mecha from any anime of their choice. judging is based on quality of the finished model (paint job, puttied adn sanded seems, etc...)
